Bait and Switch Bear Tags

A new regulation in New Mexico Bear Hunting requires you to be in constant contact with game wardens.   The state of New Mexico has reserved for it itself the right to close a section to bear hunting with only 72 hours notice.  This means that you can’t go more than 48 hours without calling the state to ensure that your still legal in the section you chose to hunt.

This is an obvious attempt to eliminate bear hunting in New Mexico.  Damn effective to as the penalties for taking a hunting vacation in New Mexico with a Bear Tag in your pocket could cost you $50,000 worth of personal property.  The state actual has tried to say its not “unjust” to require you to call the state every 48 hours and if they deemed the section closed to bear hunting then require you to spend you vacation pulling up camp moving at least 50 miles finding a new camp and resetting up your camp to start you hunt over.

This went even further in its first season of use.  Guess which sections closed off the first weekend.  The sections that had BEARS IN THEM.   The state still continued to sell Bear tags, which are issued statewide, knowing that the few sections that are bear country were already closed to bear hunting.

In short DO NOT Hunt in New Mexico.  They have used our funds to hire more full and part time game wardens which spend the majority of their time writing tickets.   The main bear hunting section had a game warden on EVERY ROAD. in bear country knowing hunters would not know of this drastic change in regulations.  A change that completely ignores the reason people hunt anyway.  To get away from day to day pressures.
